What the hell happened to Tony?
I enjoyed the hell out of the majority of the movie. I loved, loved seeing Robert’s talent shine through but the more I watch Iron Man 3, the more OOC Tony appears in much of it.
**He wouldn’t need a kid to tell him to build his way out of a situation. This is the man that built his way out of a fucking cave after major surgery and being tortured with nothing but scavenged parts from his own missiles. To design his way out of a situation is as natural to Tony as breathing. Yes, I realize he was under stress but as a decades long sufferer of panic and anxiety disorders I can tell you that your mind instantly goes to ‘escape’ and ‘now’. With a mind as brilliant as Tony’s he would have half planned a means of escape and aid before he even realized he was doing it.
**The bombs Tony made from the items he bought at the Home development place?…..never happen (thanks for that heads up, Maru). According to the IM3 art book, the syringes filled with red liquid that went into the water bottles of clear liquid are labelled ‘chlorine Gas Grenades’. Tony would never, Never, use a method that horrific It nullifies his every intention after Afghanistan. In Iron Man 2 about the only time he gives Senator Stern a straight answer is when Stern calls the Iron Man suit a ‘weapon’. Tony is and always has been, adamant that the suit is NOT a weapon. It is a deterrent So he would build a billion dollar deterrent to keep people safe but has no problem with bio chemical weapons? No. Just no.
**The destruction of his suits…already covered in another post but to let Tony respond to that incident:
“I want my armor! I want my armor! I WANT MY ARMOR! I want…...”(Avengers vs Pet Avengers Vol 1 2)
“Whatever your strengths, you’re still just a man. But Iron Man is more than that. Much more” (Dragon Seed Saga vol 5.
“Tony Stark may have done his bit out there, but only Iron Man can do what has to be done” (Iron Man vol 1 29)
You think Tony loves his bots and Jarvis? That love is nothing to what he feels for his suits.
**The final shot of him just casually tossing the arc into the ocean. What? In the MCU: After the events of IM2 where he loses his shit and the government is after his suits because his tech falls into the wrong hands. In the 616 verse: Where he goes through the hell of Zeke Stane, not to mention Osborn, Tony would Never. Ever. Just through away tech. Irregardless of whether a core was in that arc when he tossed it, the mechanics of it could be reverse engineered. He is Tony Stark, one of the most paranoid and famous people on the planet, he knows damn good and well that people will be diving down there to retrieve whatever they can. No way in hell would he throw that in there too.
**The Mandarin is (imo) Tony’s second biggest villain (the first being Obadiah Stane, the man who not only went after Tony’s livelihood and tech but ripped out his heart literally and emotionally when he betrayed the boy he helped raise) and not only does Tony not get to deliver the killshot but he is made to look like an idiot when he asks for extra clips in the gun. That scene was ridiculous. Tony Stark, the man who was designing weapons when he was still in grade school would have known full good and well that clips aren’t universal.
There are other scenes that bothered the hell out of me, most notably the removal of the arc, but I covered all that before. Robert did an amazing, amazing job with what he had, especially the nightmare/panic scenes and the scene when he is tied to the bed and especially the scene in Happy’s hospital room, all of those were pure Tony, the Tony from Iron Man 1 but the rest was a composite that never quite became a full image.
**
“The time will come
when, with elation
you will greet yourself arriving
at your own door, in your own mirror
and each will smile at the other’s welcome,
and say, sit here. Eat.
You will love again the stranger who was your self.
Give wine. Give bread. Give back your heart
to itself, to the stranger who has loved you
all your life, whom you ignored
for another, who knows you by heart.
Take down the love letters from the bookshelf,
the photographs, the desperate notes,
peel your own image from the mirror.
Sit. Feast on your life”
